The Technical Designer – Furniture will be responsible for collaborating with furniture merchandising team to conceptualize and develop new product designs and product enhancements. S/he will oversee the furniture product engineering of all items in the relevant product categories, including dining, bedroom, occasional and casual seating. S/he will use a combination of knowledge, technology and an understanding of global and domestic markets, styles, trends and usage to determine internal and global manufacturability and costing. Provides technical, procedural and professional guidance to merchants.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Uses AutoCAD to create and develop original designs aligned with Pier 1 Imports merchandising strategy and provides guidance and leadership to merchandise team through all stages of product development.
  • Point person for product development process, working across disciplines to optimize development process and protocol. Works with internal and external resources to develop and communicate trends and product direction. Communicates concepts to internal and external customers to gain concept acceptance.
  • Work with internal departments to help set specifications and work out manufacturing issues and review samples for all aspects of construction and measurements against specs. Plan, organize, and deliver concept, new product, product enhancement, process/protocol improvement presentations to management and other internal and external resources as needed for approval.
  • Keep abreast of new materials, finishes, software and other related technologies and provides value analysis on core products thus reducing costs and improving quality. Gather market data on key product cost engineering opportunities that support brand strategy and product quality requirements.  Maintains awareness of consumer and competitor product offerings including product design trends and design technologies/methods in both the U.S. and in foreign markets.  Stays abreast and maintains expert understanding of consumer, the various categories (seating, dining, occasional, storage, etc.), manufacture aspects, and cost objectives, in order to prepare and generate creative and innovative design recommendations.  Develops and maintains familiarity with new and existing manufacturing processes.
  • Champions approved design projects from concept through implementation. Understands and helps improve corporate product strategy, as well as making and implementing process and protocol improvements.

Education & Experience

  • 5-10 years prior applicable experience needed
  • Bachelor Degree preferred
  • Proficient in AutoCAD a must
  • Ability to travel up to 40% without assistance in handling luggage, being on your feet for full days walking factories and trade shows
  • Ability to adapt quickly to time zones, different cultures, food, etc.
  • Work 7 days a week for extended hours while traveling.
  • Light to moderate lifting in sample room and ability to assemble samples as needed
