  • Overview

    The Senior Oracle Database Administrator is responsible for managing and maintaining production and non-production database environments.  This includes planning, installation and configuration of Oracle RAC databases and related software, as well as Linux server administration.  This position will be involved in performing database requirement analysis, configuration, creation and maintenance of Oracle databases/instances, assisting with schema management, security management and implementation of backup/recovery strategies. This position will also be required to support other open source database technologies such as MySQL, MariadDB, MongoDB, and cloud offerings.


    This position is accountable for the security and integrity of all Pier 1 Imports data.  Periodic reports of systems operations and status are essential to the company for maintaining regulatory compliance.  This position will collaborate with team members and managers in other infrastructure teams and applications teams to maintain systems and will maintain responsibility for training and mentoring lower level database administrators.  In addition, this person will also assist in the administration of Linux servers and mentor the existing team on best practices with RedHat Linux.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Provide daily support to business customers and application team members to assist them with writing SQL statements, procedures, and packages. Provide pro-active and re-active performance tuning within the database.  Design, maintain, and review automated enterprise monitoring solution for all databases regarding critical thresholds, alerts, and errors.  Administer Oracle Database Appliances and standalone servers.
    • Provide 24/7/365 on-call support for the production environment. Maintain our Real Application Clustered (RAC) environments. Maintain our Assist Infrastructure and Applications teams with production issues when needed.  Assist Manager, IT Infrastructure in developing a fair rotation of on-call duties.  Maintain and publish the on-call document for customers to access.    Mentor and train lower level database administrators with all aspects of Oracle database administration.
    • Author and revise detailed documentation for database procedures and standards. This includes access-sensitive passwords, database standards, backup/recovery procedures, SOX/PCI standards, and installation/patch procedures. Stay up to date with new releases of database software and patch updates.
    • Continuing education utilizing resources, training, and experience is a must. This employee will have the opportunity to learn new emerging technologies and support a wide range of database technologies.
    • Design, test, maintain, and implement backup/recovery strategies for all production databases. Provide verification that successful backups are achieved. Periodically test the backup/recovery of major production databases. Ensure all databases are recoverable and meet SLAs.

    Education & Experience

    • 5-10 years with similar experience
    • Bachelor degree preferred or equivalent experience
    • Oracle database and RedHat certifications preferred
    • Proficient in Oracle, RedHat Linux, Oracle ASM, Oracle RMAN, Oracle Enterprise Manager, Oracle RAC, MySQL, MariaDB, MongoDB, Data Domain, and Cloud Database Offerings. General understanding of Microsoft Office, FTP, SSH, Korn shell, SQL, PL/SQL, NetBackup, ESP, basic network skills, PeopleSoft, My Oracle Support.
    • After hours on-call and once a month core maintenance. A rotating weekly on-call schedule is used when available.  Must be able to work nights and weekends as required by system outages and maintenance.
