  • Overview

    The Senior Claims Manager is responsible for insured and non-insured claims within the scope of the Risk Management Department.  This includes Self-Insurance and subrogation.  Develops and implements strategic initiatives to reduce claims loss frequency, severity and costs.  Utilizes TPA, in-house and outside counsel and our broker.  Creates and manages procedures and best practices for achieving optimal outcomes for all claims. Attends mediations and negotiates favorable settlements. Directly manages performance of third-party administrator(s) with respect to file reviews and claims action plans.  Manages monopolistic states and Canadian Workers' Compensation programs and requirements. Manages the data flow between Workers’ Comp and Leave of Absence. Generates financial reporting for reserve adequacy modeling.  Disseminates meaningful/actionable reporting on claims trends for Loss Prevention/Safety.  Responsible for timely OSHA reporting on applicable associate injuries as well as annual reporting.  Partners with Compliance on CPSC trigger reporting related to product claims.

    Duties & Responsibilities

    • Direct all claims management processes including setting reserves, action plans, depositions, settlement negotiations/mediations and litigation assistance. Design the optimal claims management system for best results.  Manage the third-party administrator relationship by conducting claims reviews, establishing best practices in claims handling instructions, and benchmarking performance standards.  Analyze all claims and accident trends for frequency, severity, cost and location.  Manage Canadian and Monopolistic States Workers' Compensation programs reducing premium and expenses. 
    • Develop and disseminate regular reporting to management and business units. Provide guidance and training on corrective action plans for efficient use of the claims reporting systems.  Personally visit problematic areas to provide training and assist the Loss Prevention/Safety process to reverse negative trends.  Respond to related regulatory inspections, citations and reporting requirements.  Under the Director, Risk Management's oversight, actively negotiate the third part administrator contract for each placement/renewal to obtain the best services and systems while controlling costs.  Submit monthly and annual budgeting forecasts on claims related services to the Director, Risk Management.
    • Perform all related OSHA reporting with respect to workers' compensation claims. Adhere to all the state reporting requirements and deadlines.  Work with Legal to ensure a compliant OSHA reporting system.  Perform annual OSHA reporting processes.
    • Supervises the Claims Manager, Risk Management Analyst and Risk Management Specialist by providing processes and procedures that ensure efficiency and productivity. Provides guidance and career development.  Constantly evaluates the organization of duties and the associates performance to achieve optimum results with the resources available.

    Education & Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree required
    • ARM desirable
    • Proficiency at Excel, Word and PowerPoint
    • Familiarity with various third-party administrator systems or RMIS systems
    • Up to 25% travel: Stores, DC's, claims reviews, mediations, depositions, educational conferences
    • Must be able to build relationships throughout the Company. Must be seen as a "helper" to the business units - a team player that helps control claims costs.
